ZANESVILLE, OH – As the holiday season approaches, it brings with it a mixture of joy, cheer, and stress.

While the holidays are traditionally a time of celebration, they can also be a period where many people can feel weighed down by stress. Muskingum Behavioral Health provided tips for staying stress-free during the most wonderful, and hectic, time of the year.

“The first thing is just being flexible. Plans change, life is not like the Hallmark movies. Things happen unexpectedly. Learn to be flexible and take care of yourself and what’s best for you. The other thing you can do is avoid toxic people whenever you can. If you know that there’s somebody that is toxic or not supportive of you, then try to avoid them as much as possible to keep that negativity out of your holidays.” Muskingum Behavioral Health CEO, Yolanda Taylor said.

The holidays can also bring special challenges for those in recovery from alcohol addiction. With the right strategies and support, it’s possible to enjoy a stress-free and sober festive Christmas season.

“Put yourself and your sobriety first. Make your first priority what you need to do during the holidays. You know what your limitations are. If it’s going to be too much of a stressful situation, where you think there’s a possibility that it’s going to trigger something within you, be able to say no and be prepared to say no and back out of what you need to.” Taylor said.
