To help keep your pets healthy and safe this Thanksgiving, Santa Barbara Humane is offering the following tips for a pet-friendly celebration.
While some Thanksgiving foods may seem like a delicious way to treat your furry friend, certain common holiday foods can pose a risk to their health.
First up is turkey. Many pet owners wonder if the Thanksgiving staple is safe to share, and the answer is a familiar one: in moderation. White meat without skin is generally safe for dogs unless they have allergies. Avoid fatty components like skin, gristle, and darker meat, as these can lead to issues such as pancreatitis.
However, be cautious with turkey bones. If missed in a collection of meat, or shared for chewing, pieces of the bones can lead to an upset stomach and pose a risk of airway obstructions.

Vegetables can make excellent snacks for dogs. Consider offering broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, green beans and sweet potatoes as treats. However, ensure they are free from excessive fatty coverings. If sweet potatoes come adorned with marshmallows, check for xylitol, a toxic substance for dogs.
Keep in mind that garlic and onions, though flavorful, are toxic to cats and dogs, potentially causing gastrointestinal distress and damage to red blood cells.
Certain Thanksgiving foods should be strictly off-limits to pets. These include:
Unbaked dough containing yeast – Can expand in a pet’s stomach, leading to blockages and even alcohol poisoning due to fermentation.
Alcoholic beverages – Can cause severe health issues and even death in cats and dogs.
Desserts – including chocolate, grapes, raisins, and currants, should also be kept away, as they may lead to kidney failure.
Toxic decorations – Items such as lilies, acorns, and autumn crocus can harm pets.
Santa Barbara Humane also reminds pet owners hosting guests to provide a designated safe space where your pet can retreat from the festivities.
