The Maryland Department of Health has safety tips and precautions that individuals can take to avoid heat illness this summer.
The department began monitoring summer temperature conditions and heat-related illness and death incidents in May.
From June 27 to July 3, department data shows that 341 complaints were made to emergency departments and urgent care centers. Fourteen of those complaints were made within Frederick County.
The department posted warning signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke that Marylanders can look out for, as well as treatments for these conditions.
Heat cramp symptoms include muscle pain or spasms and are caused by losing water and salt from heavy sweating, according to the department. Heat exhaustion symptoms include dehydration; cool, pale or flushed skin; extreme weakness and nausea.
Heat stroke symptoms include a body temperature over 105 degrees Fahrenheit, dry red skin, a rapid weak pulse, rapid shallow breathing and convulsions. Individuals experiencing heat stroke should call 911.
The department said residents should never leave children or pets in a car for any length of time in hot weather, even if the windows are cracked, due to the possibility of the temperature in the vehicle escalating.
To prevent heat-related ailments, the department encourages people to drink fluids; wear loose, lightweight and light-colored clothes; stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible and take it easy during outdoor physical activities.
