AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) —February is National Gum Disease Awareness Month, but being aware of gum disease is something we can do year-round.
Gum disease, or “periodontal disease” is basically an infection in your gums due to bacteria. Some causes of gum disease include:
-poor oral hygiene
-plaque buildup
-smoking
-hormonal change
-genetic predisposition
Director of Dental Hygiene for Full Smile Dental, Jessica Guerrero, RDH, says that in the early stages of gum disease, you may not have any symptoms but some include:
-swollen or bleeding gums
-persistent bad breath
-receding gums
-loose teeth
-gum sensitivity
Guerrero says if you see signs of gum disease, make sure you reach out to your dentist’s office. If you don’t get treatment you could lose teeth, have bone damage, experience dental implant rejection or complications, and have other systemic health issues.
She says to prevent it, here are some tips:
-brush twice a day, floss once, and get a good mouth rinse
-have regular checkups and dental cleanings
-consider getting “OraCare” products at Full Smile Dental after your appointment
