What the Game of Basketball Has Taught Me

What the Game of Basketball Has Taught Me

If you know my Joey, then you know he loves the game of basketball. This guy wakes up playing the game and goes to bed with his gear on for the morning. While I find Joey’s love for Steph Curry and LeBron James adorable (don’t tell him I said that), his consistent work ethic to better himself at the game reminds me that when I want to be better at something, I need to work at it. I need to lay down excuses. I need to simplify my mindset towards the goal. And heck, I need to put in the work.

Shooting hoops in October… Nana’s going to wonder where Joey’s coat was!

While we all know Joey is working towards the NBA, what’s Mom’s goal you might ask? To calm my mind, center my thoughts, speak kindly to myself and others, and most importantly, to have acceptance. A wise friend reminded me that everything is exactly the way it’s supposed to be at this moment, or else it wouldn’t be this way.

That sentiment is easier to accept during good times- but pretty easy to remind myself of when times are hard.

Today my stress of finding a new job was quickly put on pause. No, not because of the stress of 4th grade math (shown above) . But because a close friend’s loss reminded me that grief is hard and feels physically painful at times, but it also means I’m feeling. And if I’m feeling, I’m alive.

Tonight I’m grateful for the game of basketball, my front yard 1v1 game, and the sound of my children munching on apples before bedtime. I’m also grateful for support from friends who encouraged me to share the news: IM LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB. LinkedIn profile and resume is updated- just had to throw that in there.

PS. Anyone else find solace in their children’s passion!!? Share below!
