Standing Up and Feeling Dizzy? Here’s What You Need to Know

Standing Up and Feeling Dizzy? Here’s What You Need to Know Do you feel dizzy when you stand up? 😵‍💫

Feeling dizzy when you stand up could be due to postural hypotension – a drop in blood pressure that often happens when you go from sitting or lying to standing. But don’t worry, it’s more common than you might think!

What’s Postural Hypotension? Postural hypotension is that lightheaded feeling or a sudden bout of dizziness that can hit you when you stand up from a comfy seated position. Sometimes, it even brings along headaches or, in more dramatic instances, fainting spells.

Why Should I Care? Well, here’s the deal – if you’re dealing with postural hypotension, that extra sway in your step could increase the chances of a fall. Nobody wants that!

How Can I Stand up Steadily?

🧑‍⚕️Talk to Your GP:

    • Schedule a chat with your GP. They might need to review your medications and make some adjustments.

🪑Movement Before Standing:

    •  If you’ve been sitting for a while, introduce some gentle movements before you stand up. Do a little seated marching, open and close those fists, or give your buttock muscles a squeeze before standing up. This gives your body time to adjust to the change in position and minimizes the drop in blood pressure.

🥛 Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate:

    • Ensure you are adequately hydrated. Dehydration can contribute to low blood pressure. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

🍷 Ease Up on the Alcohol:

    • A little less wine and spirits might just help you stay on your feet.  Alcohol can contribute to dehydration and exacerbate symptoms of postural hypotension.
